In this project, as a team of 5, I lead the structure side in converting existing plastic packaging into a high-quality paperboard packaging solution. This was in order to reduce waste and provide a better alternative to the existing packaging in the fresh fruits sector.

The Berry Fresh packaging concept introduces a 100% paperboard solution that has all the benefits of traditional clamshell packaging, but without all the waste of plastic packaging. By focusing on sustainability and functionality, our design offers ease of closure, along with benefits such as nest-ability, stack-ability, and adequate aeration.

Process

My role was primarily in the stages of package development and refinement. My goal within the product development side of the team was 3-fold: minimize waste, communicate the brand through a paperboard package, and improve upon the effectiveness of existing forms keeping freshness.

Product Testing

To ensure that the package is able to preserve the freshness of the fruit just as well as traditional clamshells, we tested the strawberries under simulated storage conditions intended to mimic real-world scenarios to assess the packaging's resilience and effectiveness in maintaining product quality.

We used testing conditions of 3 degrees Celsius and 20% humidity, though it should be noted that the real in-store coolers have 50% humidity.

We found our solutions did indeed capture and maintain a cooler temperature within a standardized cooler environment.

**It should be noted that further testing must be conducted before any conclusions on what type of packaging best preserves fresh produce.
